Identifying Different Types of Scams

There are numerous types of scams designed to commit security breaches or fraud. It’s essential to stay informed to protect yourself from becoming a victim. Here are common types of scams to be aware of:

Phishing: Fraudsters use deceptive emails or messages containing links or fake websites to trick you into revealing personal information.

Investment Fraud: Scammers offer lucrative investment opportunities, often promising high returns with little risk, in order to swindle your money.

Check Fraud: Frausters alter or forge checks to illegally withdraw money from your bank account.

Text Message Fraud: Scammers send fake text messages to deceive you into providing personal information such as your password, account number, or Social Security number.

Phone Scams: Telephone scammers attempt to lure you with offers or requests for donations, creating a sense of urgency, to not give you time to think through their pitch.

Tips to Protect Yourself

While fraudsters are always finding new ways to deceive individuals for money or personal information, here are some essential tips to protect yourself.

  1. Be cautious when opening emails from unknown senders. If you’re unsure about an email’s legitimacy, contact the sender directly through a trusted method.
  2. Don’t answer phone calls from unknown numbers. If you don’t recognize the number, do not answer the call.
  3. Watch out for malicious websites. Double-check website addresses for subtle differences in spelling or logos that may indicate falsification.
  4. Use strong passwords and usernames. Avoid reusing passwords, and use complex combinations to better protect your personal information.
